Dr. Prakash had a longstanding interest in medicine. She was born in the state of Kerala and graduated with honors from Calicut Medical College in Kozhikode, India. Following her graduation, Dr. Prakash completed her ophthalmology residency at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal.

After her medical training, Dr. Prakash moved to the United Kingdom with her family and focused on raising her children. She then relocated to the United States, where she participated in clinical externships and observations in family medicine. Dr. Prakash rounded out her medical training with a residency in family medicine at Mount Sinai-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey.

Dr. Prakash worked in urgent care clinics in Parsippany and Chester, New Jersey, before moving down to Sarasota, Florida, with her family. Both Drs. Soordal and Shanthi Prakash went on to set up and opened their private practice. Dr. Prakash holds privileges at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Doctors Hospital; she is also a clinical assistant professor with the Florida State University College of Medicine.
